project summary
As a teenaged girl interested in STEM, I've noticed throughout my education that the number of girls in extracurricular math, science, and engineering classes starts to deteriorate as our class requirements become less strict, and we have more choice regarding our future. Instead of blaming an "oppressive and male-dominated society," I've decided to find the root of the problem. I've conducted research online and at Severn to figure out why girls are not as interested in STEM. I created surveys for both the Severn student body and the faculty to fill out to help me with this research. I plan to use the data I collect to compile a list of guidelines for educators and teachers to increase exposure to STEM, particularly for school-aged girls. I hope that they can catalyze engagement and bridge the gap in STEM fields outside of high school.

ABout me
My name is Julia Christie, and I'm a senior at the Severn School. I have two siblings at Severn: Cameron Christie '23 and Jamison Christie '28. I play on the lacrosse and basketball team, and am also a member of Severn's vocal ensemble. I had the pleasure of also being a senior prefect this year, and look forward to attending the U.S. Naval Academy this summer to study mechanical engineering.
